Luke 5:5 “But Simon answered and said to Him, ‘Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word, I will let down the net.”
What do YOU do when God tells you to do what appears absurd, ridiculous, and impossible? The story of Jesus telling Simon Peter to launch into the deep to fish helps us. From Simon’s standpoint, what Jesus asked him to do was absolutely absurd, ridiculous, and impossible. From his standpoint, it had failure written all over it. And because he is thinking this, he tells Jesus what the past attempt had yielded, saying, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing.”
I don’t know about you, but I wonder how much time elapsed before the next word was spoken. Maybe it was just a second. Maybe a minute. The bottom line is that after giving the REASON why what Jesus has said will not work, Peter reconsiders and says NEVERTHELESS. Rather than stick with the conventional wisdom that it was the wrong time and the wrong place to fish, Peter chooses to TRUST and OBEY the one he has called MASTER. At the crossroads of making a difficult decision, Peter chose to TRUST and OBEY.
So, we need to define what reality is when it comes to following Jesus. Following Jesus will bring you to crossroads where doing what He says to do will be very difficult. The request, the assignment, the command will appear to be absurd, ridiculous, and impossible. When you are at this challenging moment, the word NEVERTHELESS is a word that needs to enter your vocabulary and you TRUST and OBEY your Master!
Are you facing a NEVERTHELESS moment right now? Let Peter’s story of struggling with doing what Jesus said encourage you and encourage you to TRUST AND OBEY.
