December 8, 2025: First things FIRSTAs Abraham walked by faith into God’s promised land, he would do something very significant, not just pitching a tent to dwell in, but he also built an altar.  Now, mind you, it was not an idol. It was an…

Doing What is Good for You

Lamentations 3:26 “It is good that one should hope and wait quietly for deliverance from the LORD.”

Reading Lamentation 3:26 about doing something good for me makes me think about all the times I was told eating green beans was good for me. HMMMM. This, being transparent, is a challenging verse because it tells me to wait, and I do not like to wait. Furthermore, this verse does not just say wait. It says to wait quietly.

WHAT???  Wait Quietly! And to do so is a good thing. This one rates up there with “Count it all joy when you – when you encounter various trials.”  Hmmm

Oh, don’t miss this. The time that we are to be waiting quietly is when we are most likely scared to death, filled with fear because our verse tells us to wait quietly for the deliverance from the Lord. If we are waiting for deliverance that means we are dealing with difficult situations.  As we face the fearful moment, we need God to hear us, answer us, and deliver us.  And I would add we need it done immediately.  Yet our verse tells us it is good to put our hope in God and then wait quietly for Him to do what He does best.

Challenging? It is for me. Most likely for you as well.  Maybe that is why the writer said it is GOOD to do this.

So how exactly is waiting quietly good?

To give us an answer I find some help from another verse as the idea of waiting is not just found here. You have probably been challenged by Psalm 37:7.  It says, “Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him;” The Hebrew word for rest is to sit silently still. No pacing the floor. No screaming. Rather we are to sit silently still. Instead of being RESTLESS with God, we REST in God. As we rest in the Lord we are placing more dependence on and faith in God and this is good.  And God knows how to work things out for good.  I usually just make a bigger mess of the mess.

Are you growing in hope and waiting quietly? Are you growing in resting – committing your life needs to the Lord and waiting for Him to work? It will be good for you if you do!

Good things do come to those who wait.  Recall Isaiah 40:31.  It says, ”But those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.”
