Key Verses That Will Help a New Believer Grow and Why

Romans 5:1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
A new believer must know and remember that he has peace with God through Jesus Christ. A new believer, who recently was an enemy of God, must know that because of Christ, he has peace with God. 

1 Peter 2:2 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby,
A new believer must be taught to desire Scripture, understanding that it is the food that causes him to grow spiritually. A new believer must know the source for growing in his faith: the Bible.

1 John 5:3 Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments.
A new believer must understand biblical assurance. The assurance of salvation is found in obedience to Christ. The more a believer obeys Christ, the more his joy over his salvation will increase. 

Proverbs 1:4 To give prudence to the simple, To the young man knowledge and discretion—
A new believer must know that the Bible gives wisdom. This wisdom will then teach the new believer knowledge and discretion.

Colossians 3:5 ¶ Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, 7 in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them.”
A new believer must know to hate sin. A new believer must hate sin as much as God hates sin.

Philippians 4:6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
A new believer must know that prayer is the answer to all anxiety. A new believer must remember that he can take anything to the Lord in prayer, and God will provide peace that will guard his heart and mind.

Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the LORD [is] the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
A new believer must know the necessity of the fear of the Lord.

Daniel 1:8 ¶ But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
A new believer must know the example of godly men of the Bible. 

Psalm 119:9 How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word.
A new believer must know how to live a holy and clean life. 

Colossians 1:10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing [Him], being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;
A new believer must understand what a walk worthy of the Lord is. He must know that his life is now about pleasing God.

Psalm 119:11 Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You!
A new believer, as he memorizes Scripture, must understand why memorizing Scripture matters.

1 Timothy 4:12 Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
A new believer must be encouraged in his spiritual (and possibly physical) youth. He must be encouraged to seek to be an example.

1 John 5:13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may [continue to] believe in the name of the Son of God.
A new believer must remember how he received eternal life. 

1 John 2:14 I have written to you, fathers, because you have known Him who is from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the wicked one.
A new believer must know what the goals of spiritual growth are.

Romans 8:15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”
A new believer must know that he has received the Spirit of adoption, making him a born-again child of God. A new believer must understand that God is his Father.

Galatians 5:16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
A new believer must walk in the Spirit.

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
A new believer must understand that he is a new creation. He must know that his old nature has died, and he has become new.

2 Peter 3:18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him [be] the glory both now and forever. Amen.
A new believer must know to grow in grace and knowledge of Jesus. A new believer must further know that Christ receives all the glory.

Deuteronomy 11:19 You shall teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.
A new believer must know his responsibility to teach what he’s learned in Scripture.

Proverbs 13:20 ¶ He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will be destroyed.
A new believer must know the importance of who his friends are.

Philippians 1:21 ¶ For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
A new believer must know what life and death are about. 

2 Timothy 2:22 ¶ Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
A new believer must know to flee from sin and to pursue holy living. He must further know to pursue holy living with other believers.

Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such, there is no law.
A new believer must know what the fruit of the Spirit is.

Proverbs 4:23 Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.
A new believer must know the necessity of protecting his heart. 

Ephesians 4:24 and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.
A new believer must be reminded to act like the new creation he is.

Hebrews 10:25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting [one another], and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.
A new believer must know that church attendance and membership matter.

Proverbs 12:26 The righteous should choose his friends carefully, for the way of the wicked leads them astray.
A new believer must know how to choose friends.

Proverbs 4:27 Do not turn to the right or the left; Remove your foot from evil.
A new believer must know that holy living is a choice. 

Ephesians 4:28 Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with [his] hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need.
A new believer must understand that he cannot do the sin of his old life any longer. Rather, he must do the opposite of that sin in doing good.

Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.
A new believer must know that how he speaks matters. He must learn to choose his words so that they edify. 

Proverbs 11:30 ¶ The fruit of the righteous [is a] tree of life, And he who wins souls [is] wise.
A new believer must know the importance of evangelism.

Ephesians 4:31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. 32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ forgave you. 
A new believer must know that anger must be put away. Rather, the new believer must learn to be gracious.

Matthew 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
A new believer must know to seek the Kingdom of God above everything.

John 3:36  “He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”
A new believer must know that it is by faith he is saved. He must further understand that those who reject Jesus will face the wrath of God.
