Hebrews 9:27 “It is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment”
Okay, as I write this devotion, there should be some disclosure. As I have gotten older, I have a lot MORE appointments, from doctor appointments to dentist to skin to eyes, etc. And as I have gotten older, there is so much more technology to keep me REMINDED that I have these appointments. Just the other week I had five text messages to remind me of an appointment, first asking me to confirm the appointment and then reminding me that there would be a financial penalty if I missed my scheduled appointment. I even got a text message just hours before the appointment. Oh my! (BTW – I made it to the appointment!)
While I have, and maybe you have, a variety of appointments, there is the reality that we don’t have to attend, and we don’t even have to schedule them. What we do need to know from our verse is that there are two appointments we cannot, and listen close, will not miss.
As we look at Hebrews 9:27, I think we need to look at it first as a sobering announcement. Every person, including you, has two future appointments, two appointments no one, including you, will be able to avoid.
Now what are these appointments? First, you have a future appointment with death. And while we think about appointments coming with a specific date and time, death may come at any minute or come after many years from now. Life comes with a deadline, an unknown and, for the most part, an unexpected deadline. Friends, you have an appointment with death.
We are reminded from Eccl. 9:10 that “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going.”
Once the first appointment takes place, you then have another appointment that you will not be able to avoid. The second appointment is with God. Even if you think there is no God, you are going to have an appointment with Him. This appointment is going to determine where you spend all eternity, as those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ will be in heaven while those who don’t believe in Christ will perish and be in hell
As you read and internalize Hebrews 9:27, are you prepared for your two appointments, having accepted Jesus as your Savior?
