Matthew 4:4 “But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”
Speaking in several classes of college students not long ago, I opened each class with “What did you find to eat for breakfast this morning.” There were some confused looks, conveying if I was serious. I then rephrased the question to say “What did you FIND to EAT for your spiritual breakfast this morning.” Not waiting for an answer I pointed out Jeremiah 15:16 to them. It says, “Your words were found and I ate them, And Your words became for me a joy and the delight of my heart; For I have been called by Your name, O LORD God of hosts.” (I like how the NLT says “When I discovered your words, I devoured them.”) Pointing the students back to my question I asked them again what did they FIND to EAT for a healthy nutritious spiritual breakfast.
What are you FINDING to EAT to nourish, grow, and strengthen your spiritual life? You cannot live by physical bread alone. You need soul food and God’s Word is the food you need for your soul. Occasionally God’s Word will describe itself. You will find God’s Word is described as milk as well as meat as well as honey. Yes, God’s Word is a sword, and it is a hammer and a fire but at the forefront of descriptions is it is soul food.
In my studying of how to have a great soul food diet, I came across an idea, a concept that is very much Biblically based. My friend likes to have BIBLE BEFORE BREAKFAST and BIBLE BEFORE BED. I can’t tell you if he based this concept off of Deuteronomy 11:19 or not, but it conveys the concept. Deut. 11:19 says, “You shall teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.”
When you rise up – BIBLE BEFORE BREAKFAST! When you lie down – BIBLE BEFORE BED. I humbly suggest you explore this idea of BBB and BBB or B3x2 as a way to FIND soul food to EAT that your soul might be healthy!
What did you FIND to EAT for your spiritual breakfast this morning?
AN APRIL TO BELIEVE Note
With Easter on April 20, we are reading and encouraging you to read through the gospel of John, one chapter a day, with an eye for the word “believe” as it is prominent in John as it was his purpose for writing (John 20:31). On this April 4th, we encourage you to read/listen to John 4 where Christ is the WATER of Life with the key verse being John 4:42. It says, “Then they said to the woman, Now we believe, not because of what you said, for we ourselves have heard Him and we know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world.” May this April be an April to Believe!
Continue Strong,
And remember to DATE The Word
