God, Our Sustainer

Nehemiah 9:21 “Forty years You sustained them in the wilderness, they lacked nothing; Their clothes did not wear out and their feet did not swell.”

Nehemiah 9 gives a history lesson about the Israelites, and as we come to Nehemiah 9:21, we have read about how the Israelites were traveling through the wilderness. While they were on their way to the Promised Land, they were in the wilderness because God had sentenced the people to die in the wilderness because of their unbelief.  Yet it did not mean He would not take care of them. In taking care of them, we read in Nehemiah 9:21 that He SUSTAINED them.  I don’t know about you, but I love how the verse describes how He sustained them, saying, “Their clothes did not wear out and their feet did not swell.”

As God sustained the Israelites, God sustains us.  Like blood sustaining our life, God sustains us.  Maybe the best analogy of Him sustaining us is He is our SHEPHERD, providing us with everything we need.

Every now and then it is good to read Psalm 23.
1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2  He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters.
3  He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.
4  Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
5  You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over.
6  Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the LORD Forever.

Be reminded from Neh. 9:21 that He sustains you!
