December 8, 2025: First things FIRSTAs Abraham walked by faith into God’s promised land, he would do something very significant, not just pitching a tent to dwell in, but he also built an altar.  Now, mind you, it was not an idol. It was an…

It Matters Who Does What

Ezra 7:25 “And you, Ezra, according to your God-given wisdom, set magistrates and judges who may judge those who do not know them.”

Ezra is leading a group of God’s people back to the land of Judah and the city of Jerusalem.  He is doing this under the authority of King Artaxerxes.  The beginning of Ezra 7 tells how the king (v.6) “granted him all his request, according to the hand of the LORD his God upon him,” and how (v. 8) he came to Jerusalem in the fifth month, which was in the seventh year of the king.”

Upon getting to Jerusalem, Ezra reads a letter from the king to him. (See verse 11-12).  In the letter, the king gives very specific instructions to Ezra.  One of the things that stands out is how specific the king is regarding how the money that has been provided by the government is to be used.  (Ezra 7:17 says, “Now therefore, be careful to buy with this money bulls, rams, and lambs, with their grain offerings and their drink offerings, and offer them on the altar of the house of your God in Jerusalem.”)

As we come to our verse, the king authorizes Ezra to place others in positions of authority. The placement of these judicial leaders is not to just happen willy-nilly.  Rather, the king tells Ezra to use his (I love this) GOD-GIVEN WISDOM.

Long before Peter Drucker said the most important decision a leader makes is WHO DOES WHAT, King Artaxerxes conveys to Ezra the importance of putting the right people in the right places.  It matters WHO DOES WHAT!

On your DATE with the Word, how do you go about making decisions regarding who does what?   How do you go about deciding who does what in the home?  In the office? In a business?  In a school? In a church? On a sports team? In the government?  How much do you rely on God in making the decision?

Jesus prayed all night before deciding who would be His apostles.  (See Luke 6:12-16)

Getting things done right starts with getting the right people
