Every Christian has been charged by the Lord Jesus Christ to reach the lost. Yet, many Christians struggle with evangelism. Over the years, many evangelism methods have been created to help these struggling Christians, yet no method is perfect. To help round out other methods, we created what we call “Birthday Verse Evangelism.”
Birthday Verse Evangelism is a personal and powerful form of evangelism. It connects with unbelievers in a creative way, while also being easy to implement and teach. This method also creates a natural opening to share the gospel clearly.
Birthday Verse Evangelism has four basic steps. Before walking through these steps, we encourage you to download and print the tract, and then download the Date the Word app, which you can find on the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store
The first step of Birthday Verse Evangelism is to ask someone what his or her birthday is. This is simple, but it can feel awkward for both you and the person you’re talking to. To help ease the awkwardness, preface the question with “Hey, random question, what’s your birthday?” Often, this eases the awkwardness. But, don’t be too concerned with this, as most people happily share what their birthday is.
The second step of Birthday Verse Evangelism is to find the verse that matches that date. You can use this book to find that verse, or you can use the Date the Word app under the “Verses for any DATE.” If you use the app, you’ll likely find multiple verses. Choose the one you think is the most appropriate (Hint: If it mentions the gospel, the blood of Christ, sin, death, the fear of the Lord, or topics like that, those are good verses to choose). Read this verse to the person you’re talking to and then write this verse down on the tract. As much as you can, tell the person about what the verse means and how it affects his or her life. Also, if you’re talking to a younger child, it may be helpful not to quote the full verse, but only the part that would be helpful in the evangelization process.
The third step of Birthday Verse Evangelism is to ask him or her, “Do you have a date for your second birth?” The phrasing of this question is important because you’re not asking them if he’s had a second birthday, as everyone you’ll talk to has had that, but if he’s had a second birth, meaning that he’s been born again. You’ll find four possible responses to this question. First, the person who knows what that means, and he’ll either tell you the day or say he doesn’t know the day, but he knows he’s been born again. Second, the person will be confused by the question but will understand after you explain. You’ll need to explain what you mean by being born again, and then this person will say of course, I’ve been born again. These two responses are given by Christians whom you can encourage to use Birthday Verse Evangelism. Third, the person will know what it means to be born again, but will say that he has not been born again. Fourth, the person will be completely baffled by the idea of being born again. These two responses are given by lost people. With these two responses, you move on to the fourth step.
The fourth step of Birthday Verse Evangelism is to then present the gospel clearly with urgency. On the back of the Birthday Verse Evangelism tract, you’ll find a gospel presentation that you can read through with the person you’re evangelizing. From there, talk with the person, answer objections with Scripture, and call the person to believe the gospel. If the person desires to receive Jesus as his Savior and submit to Him as Lord, make sure he understands what that means according to Scripture, and if he does, lead him in a sinner’s prayer. You can find a sinner’s prayer at datetheword.com/the-best-news/. After this, make sure to get the contact information of the person and invite him or her to your church or help him or her find a church.
