Mark 12:31 “And the second, like it, is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
As Jesus is being questioned by religious leaders in Mark 12, one scribe asked Him to tell them what He believes to be the #1 commandment – the FIRST – the most important one of all (12:28). With 613 to choose from, Jesus states, “The first of all the commandments is: ‘Hear, O Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is one. (Deut. 6:4) 30 ‘And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ (Deut. 6:5) This is the FIRST commandment.”
He then answers the unasked question of what is the 2nd most important by saying, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (From Leviticus 19:18), and He adds His commentary that there is no other commandment greater than these. PERIOD.
It is common on NEW YEAR’S EVE or on NEW YEAR’S DAY to make resolutions for the coming year. I hope two at the top of the list will be to LOVE GOD MORE and LOVE OTHERS BETTER!
