December 8, 2025: First things FIRSTAs Abraham walked by faith into God’s promised land, he would do something very significant, not just pitching a tent to dwell in, but he also built an altar.  Now, mind you, it was not an idol. It was an…

The Perfect High Priest For Us

Hebrews 7:26 “For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.”

The Book of Hebrews is about Jesus being BETTER. Hebrews 7 teaches that Jesus is a better HIGH PRIEST than the Levitical priest.  As you can see from reading the verse to date, He has a number of things going for Him that makes him BETTER.  They are:

First and foremost is He is HOLY. He did not sin.  His holiness was not of outward appearance but of His purity of heart.  Being sinless He could die in our place and take our sins.  He was the perfect lamb of God.

He was INNOCENT or harmless.  Barnes writes, “He did not injuring anyone. To no one did he do wrong. Neither to their name, person, or property, did he ever do injury; nor will He ever. He is the only one who has lived on earth of whom it could be said that he never, in any way, did wrong to another.”

He was UNSTAINED. Because He never sinned, He never had any stain of sin upon Him. The priest of the OT had to make offerings for their own sins.  Some of them were so stained with the sins of disobedience God considered them to be unholy and even killed some of them.

He was SEPARATED from SINNERS.  While He lived among sinners and ministered to them, He was not influenced by sin.  While sinners sought to do what pleased them Jesus lived to please the Father.  John 8:29 says, “And He who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left Me alone, for I always do those things that please Him.”

He is EXALTED ABOVE THE HEAVENS.  The exaltation of Jesus above the heavens signifies His divine authority and position.  Presently He sits at the right hand of the Father who has given Him ALL authority (Matt. 28:19) as well as He has the authority and ability to secure our salvation.  Hebrews 7:25 says, “Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.”

With these credentials He is indeed the perfect fit for us.  He is able to do for us what no other priest could do.  As verse 27 says, “He does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the people’s, for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself.”
