Psalm 9:4 “For You have maintained my right and my cause; You sat on the throne judging in righteousness.”
As David is unfairly attacked by his enemies, he clings to the fact that his God, who sits enthroned as a righteous judge, defends him. He clings to the fact that God knows the motives of the heart.
The Pulpit Commentary says the following about Psalm 9:4:
Verse 4. – “For You have maintained my right and my cause.” David uniformly ascribes his military successes, not to his own ability, or even to the valor of his soldiers, but to God’s favor. God’s favor, which is secured by the justice of his cause, gives him victory after victory. “You sat on the throne judging in righteousness.” While the late battle raged, God sat upon His heavenly throne, administering justice, awarding defeat and death to the wrongdoers who had wantonly attacked His people, giving victory and glory and honor to those who stood in defense against the aggressors.”
As David was attacked, we must remember that Satan attacks us and brings his accusations against us, remember we have an Advocate – Jesus Christ, listen, the righteous. He defends us against the unfounded charges that Satan brings.
Isn’t it interesting that Satan tempts us to do wrong and when we yield to temptation, he is the one who goes and tells on us. He loves to bring up our past to God and conveniently forgets how God has forgiven us. It is vitally important we remember the teaching of 1 John 1:9 as it tells us exactly what happens when we confess our sins: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
And when Satan brings up your past, be sure to remind him of his future!
