“My son, keep my words, and treasure up my commands within you.” – Proverbs 7:1 |

Responding to the Word As part of imparting wisdom, Solomon will frequently appeal to his son, to the reader, to receive and respond with proactive actions to his teaching. In Proverbs 7:1 he appeals to his son to (1) keep his word. The idea of the word “keep” is to obey. It has the idea of putting it into action. While it is great to acquire wisdom one must also APPLY the wisdom. We must be more than hearers (readers) of God’s Word, we must be doers! While appealing for ACTION with his words there also is an appeal (2) to have a positive attitude toward the commands. He calls on him to place a high value on the commands by TREASURING the commands. As one thinks of treasuring there is the idea of holding it close, of protecting it. Treasuring also conveys cherishing. We see tremendous VALUE in the Word. Because we place a HIGH VALUE on the commands, we cherish them, and we STORE up the commands so we can USE them. How are you responding to the Word? Are you RECEPTIVE to what it says? Do you KEEP what it says, applying and obeying what is taught? Do you TREASURE the truth? Do you view it as that of great VALUE?
