Matthew 6:21 “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
To grasp the meaning of Matthew 6:21 we need to read verses 19 and 20. Matthew 6:19-20 says, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 20 “but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.”
While we do ask what is in a person’s heart, we also must ask what has a person’s heart.
What has your heart? Is it something temporal? The temptation of the temporal screams at us for our time and treasure. The temporal demands instant gratification and consumes us with a grip on our hearts.
Is it something worldly? The Bible tells how Demas forsook serving the Lord because of his love for this present world. Our hearts can be so in love with finances, fitness, fun, even family and friends, that we have no desire for God.
What has your heart? Is your heart desiring God? Are your affections on the things ABOVE as Colossians 3:1-4 teaches? As a reminder it says, “Since you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.”
The Bible tells of David being a man after God’s own heart. Acts 13:22 says, “God raised up David as king, to whom also He gave testimony and said, ‘I have found David a man after My own heart, who will do all My will.”
So what has your heart? There is an old saying that says follow the money. In my early years as a new Christian, I was told you can know much about a person by looking at their calendar and at their checkbook. The calendar and checkbook reveal what is really important to a person. What is your calendar and checkbook revealing about what is most important to you?
Are your affections toward temporal things on earth or on heavenly things that are eternal?
Application – When you give to God and His work you become more mindful of God and His work!
