Lamentations 3:24 “The LORD is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I hope in Him!”
Who are you turning to in a crisis? Who are you going to call? In Lamentation 3:24 the writer, Jeremiah, along with God’s people are facing a crisis. Things have become very difficult in Jerusalem. Jeremiah answers our question by stating emphatically that his hope is in the Lord!!
I like that Jeremiah identified an aspect of God’s character. Saying the Lord is my portion is like saying the Lord is my Shepherd. It is not just who God is but what God can do. As God is his portion he is saying God is all that He needs. Other might look to people, horses, riches, intellect, etc. for help but not for Jeremiah. Jeremiah new those things would not be sufficient. Knowing WHO GOD IS and WHAT GOD CAN DO brought about his trust in God.
Who do you put your hope in when things are dark and difficult?
I have stated in other devotionals through the year that how you think about God determines how your pray. I believe this. And how you think about God comes from what you know about God. One of the reason we recommend a yearly reading of the Book of Psalms is so that you can refresh your memory on WHO THE LORD IS and WHAT THE LORD DOES. Throughout the Psalms, the writers will say THE LORD IS.. and/or The LORD IS MY… As well. Psalms 9:10 says those who know your name trust in you.
As you reflect on the question who are you going to call as a crisis rises in your life I am pretty sure the answer is someone you TRUST. So spend the time before the crisis learning who God is and what God does so that you can emphatically state like Jeremiah the Lord is my portion (all I need) so I am going to put my hope in Him.
What is your favorite the Lord is ….. The Lord is my…. description about God?
Mine is the Lord is FAITHFUL. The Lord is MY SHEPHERD.
Continue Strong putting your trust in GOD,
And remember to DATE the Word
