Our mindset is to work and then rest. We have a hard time starting with sitting. We want to accomplish something – we want to achieve – we want to make things happen. However the Christian who is going to be most fruitful will be the one who learns to sit before they serve – to abide in order to abound.
Key Scriptures that guide:
Luke 10:38 Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house.
39 And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word.
40 But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.”
41 And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things.
42 “But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”
Mary and Martha are reveal the classic battle of the good vs the best. Martha surely was doing something good. Showing hospitality to the Lord, preparing a meal, – serving the Lord Jesus in her home – this was GOOD. However she let her serving interfere with an incredible opportunity – the opportunity to hear the Son of God teach – to have Him pour into her the words of life. She was distracted – not by the bad things of life – but this good thing – that of serving.
Mary, on the other hand, sat at His feet and heard His words. She chose what was best that day and Jesus commended her as He defended her.
You and I have an opportunity every day to sit at the feet of Jesus. We have the opportunity to listen ad hear the WORD, that gives life. We have the opportunity to talk with Him and tell Him all that we are facing and all that we desire – and not just for us but for others.
When it comes to a quiet time I use a little guide: first thing in the morning I give God worship (praise and prayer). I then get wisdom from God. (the reading of the Word- the reading of a devotional). I then go to work for God.
A few more verses to consider:
Ps. 5:3 My voice You shall hear in the morning, O LORD; In the morning I will direct it to You, And I will look up.
Ps. 143:8 Cause me to hear Your lovingkindness in the morning, For in You do I trust; Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, For I lift up my soul to You.
When I was being mentored as a young pastor I asked my mentor what were the most important verses to guide a ministry. He told me John 15:4-5.
John 15:4 “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.
5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.
Today I tell you that you are never going to be fruitful if you don’t learn to sit before you serve. Start your day with Him. Give Him the first 20 minutes – yes- make it a goal to give Him the first hour. Sit before Him and give to Him worship – sing to Him – praise Him – give adoration – pray. Then open the Word of God and read – and learn – hear His voice. Pick a verse to meditate on for the day – write it down – seek to memorize it and then all day long chew on it. If you do this you will have a mind that is focused on God and you will be a branch that is ready to be fruitful.
SIT BEFORE SERVING!
Continue Strong,
